The Hagia Sophia, built in the 6th century in Constantinople (now Istanbul), is a Byzantine masterpiece commissioned by Emperor Justinian I. The church underwent various transformations over the centuries: from the largest Orthodox cathedral to a Catholic cathedral, and then to a mosque. In 2020, it was converted back into a mosque, but still carries the Greek name Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) since ever – a symbol of its rich historical and cultural connection to the Byzantine era. The photo has been artistically edited in the style of a painted canvas.
